CHARLESTON, WV -

Shoppers in Charleston, WV are already planning where to get the best holiday bargains. Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving. But this year it seems more major retailers are opening their doors for bargain shoppers Thursday evening, which means employees have to report to work.

According to the National Retail Federation up to 140 million people plan to shop over the holiday weekend. Those figures include Thursday through Sunday. It is a slight decrease from the number last year. For the first time the National Retail Federation asked if people plan to shop on Thanksgiving Day. They found that as many as 33 million people plan to shop on Thursday.

It is a controversy playing out this week on social media.

"As a customer, I would want to see the person behind the counter ringing me up have a break," said Alicia Lewis, who lives in Huntington, WV. She said she worked in the fast food industry for a while, and hated missing holidays with her family. "It is just absolutely ridiculous that these money hungry companies are not allowing their employees to have this day that we all deserve," she said.

But some people don't mind working on Thanksgiving. Peggy Radford, a server at the Shoney's on Kanawha Boulevard in Charleston, WV said she works Thanksgiving Day every year. She said she likes to be there for customers who have no where else to eat.

"I really enjoy getting to be with the people," Radford said. "Maybe their family lives out of state and this gives them the ability to feel like somebody is with them."

Shoney's will be open starting Thursday and stay open overnight for Black Friday shoppers. The Charleston Town Center will open at 8 p.m. Thursday evening.
