United Way of Southern WV to take assume McDowell/Mercer Counties and Bluefield, VA.
BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -
United Way Worldwide has made a decision regarding the difficulties surrounding the United Way of the Virginias. The United Way Board of Directors announced Monday, Dec. 2 it had removed the United Way of the Virginias from the organization's membership.
The action came after the discovery several months ago that the charity, which served Mercer and McDowell Counties, had lost its charity and corporate status with the State of West Virginia.
Not long after the change in the organization's status was announced, the executive director of the United Way of the Two Virginias, Michelle Carter, resigned. Her resignation was announced Oct. 22, 2013.
In the announcement made by United Way Worldwide on Monday, the board stated that the Untied Way of Southern West Virginia would take over operations in Mercer and McDowell Counties. The Beckley based United Way will also be responsible for Bluefield, VA. The remaining counties in Virginia will be assigned to the United Way of the Virginia Highlands.
