A traffic stop ended with an arrest in Kanawha County on Monday, Dec. 2. Sergeant J. Thaxton was patrolling the Sissonville area according to a news release from the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office. He saw a driver of a Dodge pickup not wearing a seatbelt and pulled over the vehicle.

Walter Hamrick, 59, of Sissonville, did not have a valid driver's license. It had been revoked almost 13 years ago for unpaid citations and other miscellaneous reasons according to the same news release. Hamrick was wearing a hunting vest and had a rifle in the passenger seat according to the sergeant.

A check of his criminal history revealed Hamrick was convicted of breaking and entering and grand larceny, both of which are felonies. Despite the felony convictions, Hamrick had a valid hunting license according to the news release. He had killed a deer that day. The deer had been checked at a processing station and the antlers were in the vehicle.

Being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm is a misdemeanor in this incident according to the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office. Hamrick was charged with the violation, as well as several traffic violations. He was arraigned at Kanawha County Magistrate Court and released on a personal recognizance bond.
