FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky's first archery and crossbow season for black bears has ended, and the state says hunters met their quota of 10 bears during the nine-day season.

Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources bear program coordinator Steven Dobey says in addition to the quota being met, bears were killed outside the traditional bear zone of Harlan, Letcher, Pike and Bell counties. The zone was expanded to 16 counties this year.

Four bears were killed in Letcher County, two in Perry County and one each in Harlan, Pike, Leslie and Wayne counties. Four were females, and six were killed with a crossbow. The agency says the largest bear was a 375-pound male in Wayne County.

The modern firearm season runs Dec. 14 to 16.
