The West Virginia University Board of Governors met for a third emergency session Tuesday, but took no action on either an interim president or a process to name the permanent replacement for Jim Clements, who assumes his new post at Clemson University January 1.

After nearly three hours of discussion in executive session, members expressed their hopes to name both an interim leader and selection process at its next emergency meeting scheduled for Thursday, December 5. The goal is to then have a candidate for the Higher Education Policy Commission to consider at its meeting the following day.

Board Chairman Richard Dailey II said the board has made "great progress" over the three meetings.

The Higher Education policy commission meets in Charleston Friday, December 6. Its agenda includes a possible executive session to discuss "West Virginia University Presidential Search and Approval of Interim President."

The board already decided at an earlier meeting that whoever serves as the interim president will not be considered for the permanent post.

Clements announced his move to Clemson November 11. He told board members he planned to move to South Carolina at the end of the year. Clemson's current president retires in April.
