LOGAN, WV -

One group traveled hundreds of miles to help Appalachian families during the holidays.

The Kirby Church from Flat Rock, Mich., teamed up with the First Baptist Church in Logan, WV to give away food, toys, and clothes to those in need.

A group of at least 20 people arrived Thursday, Dec. 5, to help their West Virginia counterparts organize the drive. The two congregations hosted the event Saturday, Dec. 7 at 9 a.m.

The ministry started about four years ago, according to Kimberly Holcomb, who belongs to Kirby Church.

"My husband watched a documentary on TV about the children affected by the extreme poverty and he felt that was God's push to get it started," Holcomb said.

The giveaway was open to anyone, according to Tim Barnhouse, the pastor of First Baptist Church.

Members say the partnership has become a tradition. Two years ago, the Michiganders also visited Logan County to help relief efforts after a massive fire and flooding.
