When Timberline in Tucker County and Winterplace in Raleigh County open for skiers and snowboarders with natural snow this weekend, they will mark each of West Virginia's ski resorts as open for the season.

Oglebay Resort and Snowshoe Mountain Resort both opened in November and Canaan Valley resort opened last weekend, according to the West Virginia Ski Areas Association.

"The weather, for the most part, continues to cooperate with our snowmaking efforts and that's criticala for providing a good on-slope product for the holiday skiers," said Terry Pfeiffer, president of Winterplace and also the West Virginia Ski Areas Association. "For most of us, the holiday period is 35 percent of our yearly budget, and visitors have come to depend on West Virginia resorts for excellent conditions during that time frame."

Temperatures have again been below freezing this week, which has allowed the resorts' snowmakers to continue to cover the skiing and snowboarding terrain. When snowmaking conditions were at their best this week, with temperatures in the teens, more than 20,000 tons of snow was being produced in West Virginia per hour — which is enough snow to cover 20 football fields, with about a foot of snow made each our.

West Virginia's slopes are most typically filled with skiers and snowboarders from Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio and Florida, according to the WVSAA, and the Mountain State's season usually continues through early April. The ski season in West Virginia has an estimated economic impact of more than $250 million, with 5,000 jobs at the resorts and other related companies.
