LEWISBURG, WV -

Carnegie Hall is doing its part for a "Feliz Navidad" in West Virginia. The Lewisburg venue has booked the Spanish Harlem Orchestra's "Salsa Navidad" concert at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 12.

"We try to present diverse programming," said Lynn Creamer, artistic director at Carnegie Hall. She noted that previous holiday concerts have ranged from classical to country music. "As you can see, this programming speaks to that diversity, which is part of our mission."

Spanish Harlem Orchestra is a 13-piece, Grammy Award-winning band that has been performing for a decade. The group is based in the East Side New York community known as El Barrio. Their holiday program will feature a Latin flare to classic holiday songs, according to Creamer.

"It'll be Christmas music that's a little Latin and a little jazzy with a little salsa," she explained.

Bandleader and founder Oscar Hernandez says the group has played with a number of great artists from different eras.

"Spanish Harlem is kind of a microcosm of Latinos in New York," he said in a release. "It's an important place culturally for our people and our music. We're not a bunch of flyweights who took the name as some kind of ethic gimmick. We're the real deal, and we earned the right to take that name."

The SHO tour was funded through the Mid-Atlantic Foundation with support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the West Virginia Division of Culture and History.
