Local business spreading holiday cheer worldwide one shoe at a time

HUNTINGTON, WV -

Huntington Comfort Shoes and Orthotics is one local business giving the gift of shoes this holiday season.  Jeff McComas, Certified Pedorthist, at Huntington Comfort Shoes and Orthotics says last year they collected 300 pairs of shoes. This year they have a little more than 1,400 pairs of shoes.  Part of that is thanks to their partnership with Wayne County, WV schools who collected about 900 pairs of the 1,400.

Justin Parsons donated 15 pairs of mostly kids' shoes.  He says he donated so many because his daughter outgrew them and no one else in his family could use them, so he thought it would be a good idea to donate them to someone who could use them.  McComas says we may have 20 pairs of shoes in our closet, but there are many people around the world that don't have any shoes.

A portion of the shoes will be donated to local homeless shelter, but the majority will travel around the world thanks to a program called Soles for Souls.  McComas explains that the shoes will go anywhere there has been natural disasters like tsunamis, hurricanes, tornadoes, or something where people lost everything they owned.

Shoes of all sizes and styles are needed.  McComas says when you're talking about someone in a third world country that doesn't have any shoes or has just been through a natural disaster and has nothing, then a used pair of shoes is actually pretty nice to have.  Used shoes are fine as long as they are still structurally sound.

McComas says many people think of shoes as a fashion statement, but really it's a tool to help protect your feet.  This donation may make recipients grateful from the bottom of their feet.

Wayne County schools also helped out by collecting about 900 pairs of shoes.  Don't worry, there's still time if you want to participate.  Huntington Comfort Shoes will continue collecting donations through Christmas.
