FAIRMONT -

For many, the holidays are about spending time with family.

"It's a time for us to get together and show our togetherness. Its certainly a time for us to be with our grandchildren," said Bob Gribben, Fairmont Community Development Authority.

Last year, more than 100 people went through the drive through at the Starbucks in Clarksburg paying for the person behind them.

This simple act of kindness is also known as 'Paying It Forward'. It's something many people believe is more prevalent in the holiday season.

"It's giving back a blessing of what God has given to us. It's bringing light, its bring hope to the hopeless. To the ones that have nothing or very little," said Lt. Danitza Porras, Salvation Army.

There are many people and organizations in the Marion County community that 'Pay It Forward' all year long. The Fairmont Community Development Partnership is one of them.

"I think as we are able to help people or the community in a general way we are not only helping individuals but we believe we are doing things that is making Fairmont a better place to be and a better place to live," Gribben said.

The Salvation Army said the generosity it sees around Christmas is overwhelming.

"We see more. We are more visible during the year because the Christmas time is one of the biggest that we have. We have our kettles in different places," Porras said.

Whether you are building a house for someone in need or buying a gift for a child on the Angel Tree, the Salvation Army says you're changing lives.

"Just picture this. Someone is laid off, doesn't have a job. Christmas is coming and I have nothing for my children. I go to the Salvation Army, I fill out an application and then I come here and find a big bag of toys, clothes," Porras said. "How do you think I would feel?"

The Salvation Army is still looking for people to buy gifts for those who remain on the Angel Tree.
