CHARLESTON, WV -

A state senator is receiving a prestigious award for his efforts in the nursing community.

Sen. Robert Beach, D-Monongalia, is receiving the 2014 American Association of Nurse Practitioners Advocate State Award for Excellence.

Beach said the award is given annually to a dedicated nurse practitioner advocate in each state.

"I am honored and humbled to receive this award," Beach said. "However, my efforts in the Legislature to increase access to health care throughout West Virginia pales in comparison to the tremendous work of nurse practitioners who are often times serving as patient's primary health care provider."

The award is given to someone who has made a contribution and increased awareness in the nursing practitioner world.

Beach said he will continue to champion the goals of the AANP to improve the state's health care system. He will be recognized for this achievement during the 2014 AANP National Conference in Nashville, Tenn., in June.
