Davis & Elkins College students have something new in the Benedum Hall Dining Room – mtvU, the 24-hour college network broadcasting on three closed circuit flat panel monitors.

D&E Vice President for Student Affairs Scott Goddard says he and members of the Campus Activities Board have been interested in bringing mtvU to the College after seeing it at the National Association of Campus Activities Board Convention for the past four years.

"But, we were always told they were focusing on larger institutions," Goddard said. "This year, we talked to them about how things are looking up, and they agreed to enroll."

Broadcasting to more than 750 college campuses across the country, mtvU is the largest, most comprehensive television network just for college students. The heart of the channel is music videos from emerging artists that can't be seen anywhere else. Additional programming includes the best student-produced content, original short-form series, hourly news updates, student life features, pro-social initiatives and a wide variety of features on every aspect of campus life.

Goddard says D&E can also interface with the programming to announce important alerts and news for campus activities and athletic events.

In partnership with Youth Venture, "mtvU Grants" awards students and groups that propose compelling and sustainable social entrepreneurship projects with up to $1,000. MtvU has also led an Emmy Award-winning Sudan campaign – in partnership with student activists across the country – to increase awareness of the genocide taking place in the Darfur region of Sudan. mtvU has also partnered with The Jed Foundation on "Half of Us," an Emmy-nominated campaign designed to reduce the student suicide rate, fight the stigma of mental illness on college campuses and connect students to the help they need. In September 2011, the network launched the "mtvU Against Our Will Campaign" at the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting.

Other mtvU programming includes the Emmy-nominated "Stand In" where global icons such as Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel, Madonna, Sting, Bill Gates, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, Senators John McCain and Sam Brownback, Rawandan President Paul Kagame, Cameron Diaz, Tom Wolfe, Kanye West, John Legend and others surprise college classrooms and teach for a day; "Student Bodies," a fitness competition among students at the same school, with the winning team receiving a trip to mtvU's Spring Break; plus "College Quickies," a weekly spotlight on a laugh-out-loud clip from a student or student sketch comedy group shared with the nation. "Quinnterviews" also airs on mtvU, showcasing the talents of Emerson College senior Quinn Marcus.
