BRAXTON COUNTY, WV -

UPDATE:

Kenneth Ray Greenlief was found alive Tuesday afternoon, according to troopers with the West Virginia State Police.

Officers said they found the man standing on the side of Route 4 in Sutton. He does not appear to be injured. Greenlief suffers from Alzheimer's and schizophrenia, according to family and police.

Troopers said they spent the day scouring the area. Greenlief's son said he actually spotted his father in a field near Braxton County High School.

"Apparently, he ran from his son," said Sr. Trooper L. Mohr. "And that's when he called us to assist him."

Police cancelled the Silver Alert just after 4 p.m. A sign on I-79 alerted drivers of the Silver Alert while family and police searched the area.

Six out of 10 people with Alzheimer's will wander, according to the WV Alzheimer's Association. Representatives said caregivers should prepare for the worst, especially if their loved one tends to wander.

Walk Coordinator Kaarmin Ford said family members can purchase identification bracelets embedded with GPS tracking devices. Such monitors can be worn as bracelets, anklets, or necklaces. Ford also recommended relatives prepare a photograph with important details for police, in case their loved one disappears.

Project Lifesaver International is a program that helps locate people who wander due to Alzheimer's, autism, Down Syndrome, dementia, and other related disorders. Individuals who wear a battery-powered bracelet can be tracked by their local sheriff's department within a 50-mile radius of their home. The program, which started in West Virginia in 2005, also trains law enforcement agencies.
