HUNTINGTON, WV -

UPDATE:

Huntington police officers have identified the victim in Tuesday's shooting as 44-year-old Robert Crutcher. The Huntington Police Department said he died from his injuries at the hospital on Tuesday evening.  Officers found him in an upstairs bedroom on 27th Street just after 5 p.m. Crutcher had a gunshot wound to the chest.  He was transported to St. Mary's Medical Center where he died a short time later, according to investigators.

The suspect in the shooting has been identified as 25-year-old James Lee Johnson of Michigan. After the shooting, Johnson showed up at Cabell Huntington Hospital seeking treatment for head injuries, police said.

Police said the suspect was at Crutcher's home when the shooting happened. He was talking to several men in the upstairs bedroom when an altercation started, according to investigators.  Crutcher stepped in to tell Johnson to leave, when Johnson pulled a pistol and shot Crutcher, police said. The other men then wrestled the gun away from Johnson before he ran off.

When Johnson was released from the hospital, police arrested him and took him to the Cabell County Courthouse to be arraigned in front of a magistrate judge.  During the hearing, Johnson told 13 News the shooting was in self-defense.  "They tried to get me.  They thought I was by myself. I'm not saying what I did was right, but still though, self-defense.  That's all I got to say, sir," he said.

Johnson has been charged with one count of murder in connection with the death of Crutcher. Johnson is also wanted by Michigan on a separate weapons charge, according to police.  He will remain in the Western Regional Jail without bail pending his next court hearing.
