CHARLESTON, WV -

The West Virginia Judicial Vacancy Advisory Commission submitted the names of two candidates it believes would best fill the judicial seat in Mingo County Circuit Court.

The board gave the names to Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, who makes the final decision.

The commission selected Jonathan Jewell and Teresa McCune as the "best-qualified persons."

Jewell works with the Public Defender Corporation and McCune serves as the chief public defender for the 30th judicial circuit.

The seat became vacant after former Mingo Co. Circuit Court Judge Michael Thornsbury resigned in October, shortly before pleading guilty to a federal conspiracy charge.

The commission interviewed six candidates for the seat, according to a written letter from Chair Debra Scudiere.

Media outlets previously reported the seventh candidate, Tish Chafin, withdrew from the race.

Thornsbury was suspended from the bench after he was indicted by a federal grand jury on an unrelated charge. The West Virginia State Supreme Court appointed Senior Status Judge John Cummings to serve as Thornsbury's temporary replacement.

The commission also recommended Deloris Nibert for the judicial vacancy in the Putnam County family court.
