Electric company warns of door-to-door scammer in KY

Posted: Updated:

People in Floyd County, KY say phone and email scams are commonplace, and they are experienced enough to spot them.

The latest scam they are being warned about is different from the ones they are used to.

Big Sandy Rural Electric has sent out an advisory to its Facebook followers warning of a man, dressed in gray, traveling around the Blue River area in a white utility van, asking for payment on their electric bills.

Officials with Big Sandy RECC say they received a call from a customer who is up-to-date on her bill, who said that the man approached her, saying she needed to pay up or else her electric would be turned off.

Representatives of Big Sandy RECC say it is a scam.  Company officials say their employees never ask for payment in the field, and that payments are done only online, over the phone or in person at their Paintsville office.

Most people we spoke to here say they would not fall for it, but have some reservations about their elderly neighbors.

"There's a lot of good-hearted people that would fall for it," says Tiffany Burkett of Prestonsburg. "They're not going to have their electric and stuff during Christmas time."

Anyone who is approached by someone asking for a utility payment is asked to call local authorities immediately to file a report.
