Students make "love knots" for less fortunate families

Families living at the Huntington City Mission will be feeling a bit warmer this holiday season, thanks to "Love Knots" made especially for them by 4th grade students at Martha Elementary.

Love Knots are blankets that the students make with the help of their parents and peers. Mrs. Melissa Morton, 4th grade teacher at Martha, has sponsored this project for the past several years. Mrs. Morton uses this activity as a character lesson in responsibility and caring.

"Fourth grade students at Martha Elementary vowed to assist the needy this holiday season", says Mrs. Morton.

Students were asked to perform extra duties at home to earn money to donate towards the Love Knots. With their devotion to the drive, and with fabric donations and some assistance from their parents, the students raised enough money to make and create 16 blankets. With the aide of several "driven" mothers, students were able to tie the knots, completing each blanket themselves.

In addition to making the Love Knots, students were also asked to create Christmas poems that will be sent along with the blankets to bring additional Christmas cheer.
