CHARLESTON, WV -

UPDATE:

Former Clay County sheriff Miles Slack was sentenced in court today on federal wiretapping charges.

Slack told the court before sentencing, "I do realize the seriousness of my act.  If I could take it back, I would. I regret what I did very much. I regret having to bring my family and friends here and I regret invading my wife's privacy."

Slack was sentenced to one to two years of probation and $1,000 fine.

Slack's wife testified on his behalf saying, ""He's a really good man. He made a mistake. None of this was meant for the Supreme Court. I know with all my heart all of this was meant for me."

The former sheriff of Clay County is set to appear in federal court for a sentencing hearing on Thursday.

Miles Slack faces up to five years in prison after he pleaded guilty to hacking his then-wife's work computer in September.

Prosecutors said Slack secretly installed a keystroke logger on a computer in the Clay County Magistrate Court office in April while he and his then-wife were going through a divorce.

Slack admitted he intended to monitor her activity, including messages she sent through Internet chat and email.

Slack worked for the Clay County Sheriff's Department for 16 years before he was elected sheriff. He took office in January.

Slack resigned shortly after the charges were brought against him. He was replaced by Garrett Samples in October, who is the new sheriff.

As part of the plea agreement, Slack agreed never to seek public office again.

His hearing is scheduled on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the federal courthouse in Charleston.
