CHARLESTON, WV -

Popping the question is one of the biggest decisions of your life. I went to the experts to find out dome of the do's and don'ts of engagement ring shopping.

Want to make sure your lady loves her ring? The wedding web site theknot.com says people are skipping the tradition of going alone, and bringing their special someone along for help instead!

Steve Clonch has been in the diamond business for years and said he sees couples shopping for rings more now than he used to.

"I think either way is fine, I think it's great that ladies can get involved on a ring they will wear for the rest of their lives," Clonch.

Sue and Dan Cottrell Have been married more than 50 years. Mrs. Cottrell likes the idea of keeping the engagement a surprise.

"I didn't know it was coming," said Sue Cottrell.

According theknot.com you should throw out the 2 months salary rule. The web site suggests you buy the best ring in your budget that will not put you in debt. Clonch said his clients are spending more these days.

"Today most people are getting married a little bitter later and they have a little bit more income," said Clonch.

Theknot.com even says some couples are splitting the cost of the ring. Clonch said that's not the case for most of his customers.

"In our world we are very traditional store and maybe that brings in traditional people, that's rare."

Doing your research and shopping around can help you to get the best deal on your ring.

After 53 years, the Cottrells must know the secret to a successful marriage. They say it's not about the ring, it's about the love behind it.
