PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 20, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Service members deployed to Afghanistan will dine on traditional holiday fare this Christmas, thanks to the efforts of America's combat logistics support agency.
DLA Troop Support Subsistence employees contracted for more than 39,000 pounds of turkey, 11,300 pounds of beef, 22,600 pounds of sweet potatoes, 11,800 pies and 560 gallons of eggnog to warfighters deployed to Afghanistan for the Christmas meal, according to Anthony Amendolia, the Subsistence supply chain's customer operations chief for Europe and the Middle East regions.
Amendolia said DLA Troop Support begins working with customers and vendors six months in advance to plan for the Christmas meal.
"Our servicemen and women sacrifice so much every day to defend our freedom," he said. "We're extremely proud to bring them a traditional holiday meal while they serve away from their families this Christmas."
Army Col. Robert King, Subsistence director, applauded the efforts of DLA Troop Support employees to bring Christmas meals to our deployed service members.
"Our teammates around the world, from Afghanistan to Europe and here in Philadelphia have been working hard with our Subsistence Prime Vendor to ensure we get a traditional American Christmas meal out to the troops."
DLA Troop Support also supplies dining facilities across the U.S., the Navy fleet, and on other overseas military installations.
One of five DLA Troop Support supply chains, Subsistence ensures that service members and other DOD customers around the world have high-quality, nutritious meals daily.
DLA Troop Support supplies America's armed forces with $13 billion annually of food, uniforms, protective equipment, medicine and medical supplies, repair parts and construction and equipment.
