CHARLESTON, WV -

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin issued a proclamation ordering all U.S. and State flags displayed at all state facilities be lowered to half-staff from dawn to dusk Monday, December 23.

The day of services will be for Major Gregory Vance Shumate of Ravencliff, Wyoming County. While on active duty and during a visit home to West Virginia, Shumate passed away unexpectedly December 16.

Shumate, who through his distinguished military career attained the rank of Major, enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1988 and was honorably discharged in 1991. Shumate also served in the West Virginia National Guard from 1991-1995, the U.S. Air Force from 1996-2000, and re-entered active duty with the U.S. Army in 2004. During his service, Shumate deployed to serve in Operation Desert Shield/Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. 

Through his dedicated service and sacrifice, Shumate was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Air Force Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star Device, the Southwest Asia Service Medal with one Campaign Star, the Iraq Campaign Medal with two Campaign Stars, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Air Force Training Ribbon, the Army Overseas Service Ribbon, the Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia), the Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait), and the Parachutist Badge.
