According to the Garrison Fire Department fire chief, Marilyn Fannin, 84, and her son Daniel Fannin, 65, died as a result of a house fire that occurred shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday, Christmas night, in the area of Montgomery Road in Garrison.

The fire chief says Marilyn Fannin was found just inside the back door of the house and it is believed she was trying to escape.  She died later at the hospital of smoke inhalation, while Daniel Fannin died at the scene of the fire, also of smoke inhalation.

The Garrison Fire Department, along with the Firebrick Volunteer Fire Department and the Black Oak Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene.

The fire chief says that the fire was fully engulfed when crews arrived, and that trucks had to be used to haul water to the scene.

It took 25 crew members to fight the fire, which rekindled twice throughout the overnight hours.

According to the fire chief, smoke detectors were not seen or heard inside the house.

The fire chief says it is believed the fire was caused by a space heater in Daniel's room.

Family members had left the house shortly before the fire started.

A mother and son both died after a fire broke out in a home on Montgomery Road in a rural section of Lewis County, Kentucky.

According to the chief of the Garrison Fire Dept., the man was 65-years-old and the woman was in her mid-80s.

Dispatchers confirm that fire crews were called to the home in Garrison about 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Lewis County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
