SUNDIAL, WV -

According to Carrie Bly, communication specialist for the West Virginia Department of Transportation, the rock slide that occurred Friday Dec. 27 along WV 3 near Sundial in Raleigh County is a work still in progress.

The West Virginia Division of Highways and contractor, Vecellio & Grogan, are still working on clearing the roadway.

Three large boulders and debris fell onto the roadway. Over the weekend, crews began using explosives to blast the boulders.

"This process is quite difficult due to the location of the road, which is sandwiched between a hillside and the Coal River," Bly explained via a press release. "Measures must be taken to limit the amount of debris that enters the water."

Blasting of the boulders continued Monday, Dec. 30.

Once the debris in the roadway is cleared, work will begin to stabilize the hillside.

Clearing of WV 3 is expected to take at least 10 days. The roadway will remain closed during this time.
