UPDATE: Downtown Charleston road reopened after water main break

Posted: Updated:

According to West Virginia American Water, Washington Street has been reopened.  It was reportedly reopened at around 5 p.m.

A major road running through downtown Charleston has been shut down until further notice due to a suspected water main break.

Washington Street, just before Clendenin Street and the Greyhound Bus Station, is covered in water.  The water is quickly turning into ice and slush in some spots.

Metro 911 dispatchers were alerted to the problem just after 4:30 a.m., they said.

West Virginia American Water has been notified of the problem.  Workers have been extremely busy fixing similar water breaks overnight.  The freezing temperatures have made fixing these ruptures a challenge, workers said.

It could be several hours before crews are able to repair the burst, which happened in a 12-inch pipe, they said.
