MILTON, WV -

SuperValu Inc., one of the nation's largest grocery wholesalers and retailers, is closing its Milton food distribution center. The warehouse, which employs approximately 90 workers, has been operating in Milton for nearly 40 years.

A SuperValu spokesman said the Milton distribution center would be consolidated with the company's Stanton/Pittsburgh operation. The change should take effect sometime in April, he said.

Milton Mayor Tom Canterbury said that since the Supervalu warehouse is located outside the town limits there would be no loss of tax revenue for Milton. Nevertheless, the area will nevertheless feel the impact of the lost jobs, he said.

The company's food distribution and retail grocery business are separate operations, so none of the company's stores – which include Save-A-Lot, Cub, Farm Fresh, Hornbacher's, Shop 'N and Saver and Shoppers – will be affected by the closing of the warehouse.

With annual sales of approximately $17 billion, SuperValu serves customers across the United States through a network of 3,358 stores. The network is composed of 1,834 independent stores serviced primarily by the company's food distribution business, 1,334 Save-A-Lot stores, of which 954 are operated by licensee owners; and 190 traditional retail grocery stores.

Headquartered in Eden Prairie, Minn., SuperValu has 35,000 employees nationwide. For more information about SuperValu, visit www.supervalu.com.
