South Point, OH -

Lawrence County Ohio Sheriff Jeff Lawless says an elderly woman was attacked by a homeless woman in the parking lot of a shopping store Wednesday.

The sheriff says the elderly woman had just finished shopping just before 1 p.m. at Walmart and was getting into her car when a homeless woman, 31-year-old Kelli Childers, of Huntington, ran up and allegedly began to assault her with her fists and attempted to take the woman's purse. The elderly woman was knocked to the ground and the sheriff says she yelled for help during the struggle.  Bystanders who were watching saw Childers running away and chased her down until deputies could get there. The elderly woman's purse was given back to her and she did not require medical attention.

Childers is charged with felony robbery and misdemeanor assault. She was taken to the Lawrence County Jail. She is slated to be in court Friday, Jan. 17.
