MORGANTOWN -

UPDATE:

Construction for the Monongalia County Ballpark is underway.

Mascaro Construction received a notice to proceed at the end of last week.

The schematic design of the ballpark is being completed.

There will be 25 hundred fixed seats, hillside, and club seating available at the park.

The area will also include a clubhouse, offices, and strength and conditioning facilities.

Construction vehicles are planned to mobilize by the end of the month.

UPDATE:

The Mononghalia County Commission had a busy day.

Today the county commissioners read and approved final plans for use, funding and construction on the new ballpark and the interchange.

The county will own the ballpark until construction is complete. West Virginia University will assume ownership when the park is finished.

"We've never had a project that involved the cooperation and relationship of the county commission, West Virginia University, the Town of Granville, a private developer, the Department of Highways. It's very significant. To my knowledge it's never happened before," said Bill Bartolo from the Monongalia County Commission.

The I-79 Interchange will be built near exit 155 for better access  to the University Towne Center and the baseball stadium.

ORIGINAL STORY: The West Virginia Department of Transportation, Division of Highways held an informational workshop January 15.

The public was invited to come discuss the proposed I-79 Interchange Project. The project consists of a new interchange on I-79 approximately halfway between I-79, at exit 152- US 19 Westover/Morgantown and I-79, exit 155- WV 7 West Virginia University exits.

The proposed project will tie the interchange into two new frontage roads, connecting a relocated County Route 46/3 to the west and an extension of University Town Centre Drive to the east of I-79 including the new proposed WVU Athletic Facilities.

Deputy State Highway Engineer, Greg Bailey, says the public is asked to voice their opinions on the proposal.

"For people who live in this area, is to participate in the process. if they can't be here tonight there is a 30 day comment period after tonight they can get on our website and provide those comments electronically, they can print copies of the comment form and mail those in. So what we really need to do is hear from the public," said Bailey.

Construction is expected to start in the Summer of 2014.
