Officers and local dignitaries from University Healthcare officially opened a new medical facility in Charles Town that houses urgent care, orthopedics and sports medicine Jan. 3.

The facility also houses Jefferson Physical Therapy, a department of Jefferson Medical Center, formerly Jefferson Memorial Hospital.

"There will be three or four physicians covering different shifts in the building," Dr. George Harris, chairman of family medicine, said.

Harris said the full-service urgent care includes X-rays and laboratory services.

"Patients coming through and seen by any of our clinics should know that all patient records are in the same system," said Aaron Henry, a physician with University Healthcare Physicians. "For instance, a patient coming in to the clinic with a sore throat will have his or her medical records on file if they visited us previously."

Harris said that kind of uniformity is a big advantage throughout the UHP system.

"This new facility puts a place in the Charles Town community so individuals don't have to go to the emergency room for non-emergency care," Harris said. "We have the ability not only to handle acute care but have a relationship with an orthopedic surgeon especially with sports medicine when there is a need for rehabilitation, all under the same roof.

"It's convenient health care in a timely fashion."

Ground was broken for the new medical office building in May 2013.

The architect was Design Concepts and the builder was Howard Shockey and Sons of Winchester, Va.

It is run by University Healthcare Physicians, or UHP, a West Virginia University Hospital affiliate.

"This beautiful medical building and the talented professionals that work here are the direct result of the WVU School of Medicine working together with our University Healthcare hospital partners to improve the health of Eastern Panhandle West Virginia," said UHP Chief Executive Officer Konrad Nau said. "We hope everyone shares our pride in this facility, and what it means to our community."

The urgent care office is open Monday through Saturday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 8 p.m. It is a walk-in clinic, so appointments aren't required, and most insurance plans are accepted.

In Jefferson County, UHP also has a maternity and women's health facility in Ranson, as well as a flagship family medicine facility in Harpers Ferry.
