SOUTH CHARLESTON, WV -

As services picked up at Trinity Independent Baptist Church on Sunday, it was evident there was a void left behind.

Walter Means, a preacher who often delivered sermons at the church, passed away last week. He and his wife, Charlotte, were killed in a car crash along Corridor G while they were driving home after services.

"When he got ready to get out the door that night I said how about you preaching Wednesday night," said Gene Pauley, the couple's pastor. "He said okay, but needless to say he didn't have to preach, he's already in heaven."

Friends say Walter Means will be missed not only at Trinity Baptist Church. During his lifetime, he preached at dozens of churches throughout the area.

"He really loved his people, his congregation," said Sharon Wentz, who knew Means for over 40 years.

Although Means had only attended services at Trinity for a year and a half, church members say he had already made an impact on their lives.

"He was humble and meek, and talked the word of God, never strayed from it," said Pauley.

Means had been a pastor and preacher for more than 46  years. More than 500 people attended the funeral for him and his wife on Thursday.
