Health experts help people sign up for insurance as deadline approaches

Posted: Updated:

The deadline to sign up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act is approaching and Janie Hovatter is busy helping people choose plans at Cabin Creek Health Systems.

If you don't sign up for insurance by March 31 she said you will see a $95 fine on your 2014 tax returns, or 1% of your income, whichever is higher.

Hovatter said that is not the real reason you should sign up. She fears some people don't realize the consequences of being uninsured after the deadline.

"This charity money is going away, we have had a discount program here, that is going away the last of March if you have an illness, you're just taking a big risk," said Hovatter.

Hovatter said she sees the plans making a positive difference in patients. She said the expansion of Medicaid has also helped.

"Even with all the stress and the issues that have been trying to get this thing rolling, those kind of stories is what makes it worth it, and that's what I want to get to people," said Hovatter.

If you need help, Hovatter says there are plenty of certified application counselors like her who can help you get covered.
