Students visit Marshall University campus for 'Brain Expo'

HUNTINGTON, WV -

Hundreds of elementary school children from around the region visited Marshall University's Memorial Student Center on Friday. They were taking part in activities designed to help them learn about the brain and nervous system.

The sixth Brain Expo at Marshall featured a number of interactive stations where children explored how parts of the nervous system are responsible for the way bodies function. They also learned how healthy lifestyle choices can lead to better brain health. Students tested their reflexes, playing memory games, coloring their own "brain hats" and building brain cell-shaped key chains.

About 250 volunteers, mostly Marshall University undergraduates, helped the students at their science stations. "It's very different from just reading a book and so it gets them excited. It gets them thinking about their own bodies and how they work and it gets them asking questions which is exactly what we want," said Nadja Spitzer, an assistant professor of biological sciences at Marshall University.
