Officials urging caution going into winter storm

IRONTON, Oh. -

Law enforcement and emergency management agencies are planning for a busy two days, and they hope drivers are planning to drive sparingly and carefully.

Troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol's Lawrence County post tell 13 News they have responded to 188 accidents this year.

In 2013, they responded to 134 accidents during the same time period.

This year's increase, they believe, is due to the several episodes of snow.

They also believe many of those accidents could have been prevented

We spoke with social worker, Tammi Lowe-Rowe, who is due at her new job on Monday morning, is planning to brave the roads in her rear-wheel drive minivan.

"I'm a new worker, and I'm in training," she says. "So I'm going to make sure not to miss any of that."

By then, there could be a half an inch of ice on the roads covered with as much as eight inches of snow.

Ms. Rowe says her minivan has managed well so far this winter, but says there is a line she will not cross.

"If it's absolutely way too bad, and I can't make it, I'll just have to call in," says Ms. Rowe.

Troopers say they hope more drivers make that decision this weekend.
