CFO and Vice President of Finance,
Fairmont General Hospital
There are few experiences as exciting as becoming a parent for the first time or getting a promotion at work. When the two come a week apart, things can be hectic.
That's what happened to Whitney Patterson last September. She was promoted to the position of chief financial officer at Fairmont General Hospital, and a week later she gave birth to her first child.
She was back on the job — sporadically — a week after her daughter was born, and she spent part of her leave checking her work emails constantly.
Patterson started her job at Fairmont General in early 2011 as an accountant. Soon after that, the controller left, and she was promoted to that position.
Last September, the hospital filed for bankruptcy reorganization. It wasn't long before most senior management, including the chief financial officer, left.
"It was determined that for a hospital this size, the controller and the CFO were performing most of the same functions, so they moved me into this position" Patterson said.
Patterson was born in Clarksburg. She attended Robert C. Byrd High School and West Virginia University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in accounting and a graduate certificate in forensic accounting and fraud investigation.
After she graduated from WVU, she got a job with Dixon Hughes Goodman. She traveled all over the country auditing health care companies.
In her spare time, Patterson is treasurer of the Fairmont Home Medical Board and the RCB Alumni Association. The alumni association provides scholarships to 40 or more of the high schools graduating seniors each year, she said.
In June, Patterson will become treasurer of the West Virginia Healthcare Financial Management Association.
Patterson is married to David Patterson, a financial adviser for Ameriprise Financial Services in Clarksburg. They and their daughter, Audrey Lane Patterson, live in Clarksburg.
