MARTINSBURG, WV -

Rosemary Hooe, a registered nurse in the orthopedic unit, and Paul Chulak, who works in food and nutritional services, are the latest winners of the DAISY Award For Extraordinary Nurses at the Berkeley Medical Center Nurse Work Life Council.

Both were honored at recent ceremonies at the medical center. They received a certificate along with a sculpture called A Healer's Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona tribe in Africa.

Chulak was nominated because of his outstanding customer service skills. According to one patient who was on a very limited diet, "Paul went out of his way to find something I could eat following surgery. He even came back later to check on me. He is a terrific representative for the dietary department."

The DAISY award was established nationally to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. Nurses at University Healthcare's Berkeley Medical Center and Jefferson Medical Center are being honored throughout the year with DAISY Awards sponsored by the University Healthcare Foundation.

The nonprofit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, Calif. and was established by family members of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at 33 in 1999 from complications of an autoimmune disease.
