Estranged Husband of Slain Preston County Woman Pleads Guilty to Child Concealment

The estranged husband of a slain Preston County woman has pleaded guilty to failing to allow the couple's daughter to visit her grandparents.

Nathan Edward Mitchell, of Florida, pleaded guilty to one count of a four count indictment of concealment or removal of a minor child from a custodian or from a person entitled to visitation in Harrison County Circuit Court Friday. Nathan Mitchell violated a court order granting grandparent visitation with the intent to deprive his daughter from seeing Shannon Stafford's foster grandparents, according to court documents. The incident happened April 20, 2013 and Mitchell was later arrested in June 2013.

Shannon Stafford, 29, was gunned down by her ex-father in law, Larry Mitchell, 54, of Shinnston, in a Wal-Mart parking lot in April 2012, according to Morgantown Police. Larry Mitchell is the father of Stafford's estranged husband, Nathan Mitchell. Larry Mitchell pleaded guilty to Stafford's murder in Dec. 2012.

Judge Thomas A. Bedell accepted Mitchell's plea. The penalty for concealment or removal of a minor child from a custodian or person entitled to visitation carries a one to five year sentence in prison. Both Mitchell's attorney and Prosecuting Attorney Rachel Romano agreed that Mitchell's sentence be suspended and that he receive probation. Judge Bedell has set Mitchell's sentencing for 11 a.m. on May 9.

Mitchell will remain out on bond and is required to abide by the original court order.
