Experts in legislation, science, public health and corporate governance will discuss water regulation at 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 24 in the new event hall at the West Virginia University College of Law.

Admission is free of cost and the public may attend. Refreshments will be served.

The symposium, "Protecting West Virginia's Water: Legislation, Litigation, and Lessons Learned for the Future of Water Regulation in West Virginia," is sponsored by the WVU Environmental Law Society and the College of Law's Center for Sustainable Energy and Development.

Featured speakers will include: West Virginia Senate Majority Leader John Unger, D-Berkeley; Paul Ziemkiewicz of the West Virginia Water Research Institute; Dr. Rahul Gupta of the Kanawha -Charleston Health Department; WVU law professor Patrick McGinely; and a representative of the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection.

Second-year law student Joshua Ash, president of the Environmental Law Society, said the speakers will discuss and analyze the safety of public water resources in West Virginia as well as changes in water-related regulation that could result from the chemical spill that contaminated the Elk River earlier this year.

"This event hopes to bring together the state's experts and lead us in the direction of intelligent and well-educated decision making," Ash said.
