A Barboursville man is in federal custody on charges he threatened U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin and his family with violence.

U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin said Steven Anthony Major, 49, was taken into custody Friday, March 21, after he allegedly made multiple threatening calls to Manchin's Charleston and Washington, D.C., offices.

The complaint, unsealed Monday, states Major "identified himself and made violent threats targeting Senator Manchin and his family members."

If convicted, Major's faces up to 10 years in prison.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the West Virginia State Police. Assistant U.S. Attorney Haley Bunn is in charge of the prosecution.
