At more than 100 years old, the Market Street Bridge still sees heavy traffic between Steubenville and Follansbee. However, the bridge's days may be numbered.
Dave Sada, West Virginia Division of Highways bridge engineer, said the bridge was built in 1904, but it could be only a matter of time until it's officially closed. Officials at the Brooke Hancock Jefferson Metropolitan Planning Commission discussed the bridge's life span at their meeting on Wednesday.
Steubenville Mayor Domenick Mucci said this bridge is crucial for commerce between Ohio and West Virginia and especially for downtown Steubenville, and is encouraging the two states to develop a plan to invest in this bridge and make the necessary repairs.
While officials continue to discuss how to maintain the Market Street Bridge, the new Ohio River Bridge project is moving forward, and a design agreement was reached; a state line agreement is also under consideration.
