Bellucci Premium Comments on the FDA Approved Health Claim that Two Tablespoons of Olive Oil Per Day May Reduce the Risk of Coronary Heart Disease

Tuscan olive oil producer Bellucci Premium responds to an article on how a daily intake of 23 grams of olive oil may prevent coronary heart disease

An article published by Olive Oil Times on February 26th titled, “Two Tablespoons: FDA’s Take on the Benefits of Olive Oil”, states how “replacing saturated fatty acids with monounsaturated fatty acids reduced levels of serum total cholesterol and serum LDL cholesterol, both of which are known to increase the risk of coronary heart disease.” Olive oil’s monounsaturated fat content consists of nearly 74 percent of the total fat content, which can fulfill the recommended 17.5 grams with two tablespoons.

The study further proves that in order to efficiently reduce the risk of heart disease, olive oil must be used to replace an equivalent amount of saturated fat in the diet. Dietary guidelines suggest “consuming less than 10 percent of calories from saturated fatty acids.” Replacing these with monounsaturated fatty acids results in increased health benefits associated with low blood cholesterol levels.

Consumers are quickly grasping the healthy side effects of olive oil intake, evidenced by the consumption rate, which has consistently increased by 5% annually between the years of 2008 and 2012 and continues to rise.
