GRANTSVILLE, WV -

UPDATE:

Three people are dead after a fatal fire engulfed a home in Calhoun County.

Fire officials now investigating the scene to figure out the cause. 13 News Reporter Christina Fan spoke to devastated neighbors...many of whom knew the family for years.

"I miss them all real bad" Ernest Lap says he was in shock Saturday night to find his best friend's house on Leading Creek Road in flames. "Fire, probably ten feet, twenty feet tall. The flames were so massive, it took almost 12 hours to extinguish."said Lap.

And it took more than 30 thousand gallons of water to extinguish all the flames. In the end, the fire claimed the lives of three people living inside. A man...his elderly mother, and his daughter.

"I bought this place back in 1995 and have been good friends with them ever since," said Lap.

Neighbors say they rushed to scene as soon as they saw the flames and tried to save the family. But by the time they got here, it was already too late.

"Pulled a four-wheeler off the back porch and tried to get into roy's room there, but there was just too much smoke," said Lap.

"You're talking to someone who's just been here for so long you harden yourself for it," said Mark Lambert with the WV State Fire Marshal's Office.

Investigators were at the scene for hours Sunday afternoon. Shifting through the building for evidence while trying to recover the bodies.

"Do our normal measurements and stuff, once the victims are removed then we determine what caused the fire," said Lambert.

Neighbors say they're still coming to grips with the loss.

"I'd always take him to the doctor's and helped baby sit his mom, said Lap.

They say the family's memories won't be lost. And they'll keep them in their prayers. The state fire marshal's office is still investigating the cause of the fire.

The house was ruled as a total loss.
