UPDATE:

The West Virginia Division of Highways has confirmed that Route 39 in the Belva area of Fayette County is back open.  According to the transportation management center both lanes of the road were reopened at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1.

The road was closed on Monday night after a mudslide blocked off both lanes of the road.  Crews worked throughout the day on Tuesday to pull down unstable areas and ensure the safety of drivers traveling on Route 39.

Workers with the West Virginia Division of Highways shut down both lanes of Route 39 on Monday night after a mudslide.

The slide was reported on Monday, March 31 near Belva. Crews with the West Virginia Division of Highways have been on the scene since 8 p.m.  Gauley River and Gauley Bridge Fire Departments were that first groups to respond.

Officials with the WVDOH said that they will keep the road closed until they can be certain there is no threat to drivers.  They said that the warm up in the weather along with recent rain could lead to more slides in the area.  Meanwhile, crews are working to stabilize the hillside.
