CHARLESTON, WV -

It's time to start thinking about that summer job!  Bunny Harper, Employment Program Office Manager at Work Force West Virginia in Charleston says employers will start posting summer jobs in the next few weeks and already filling them between May and June.  In addition to typical season summer jobs like landscaping and lifeguards, Harper says there's typically an increase in part time bank tellers, customer service, and cashier jobs.

Harper points to a declining unemployment rate of 6.0% to show the economy is on the rebound, opening new job opportunities for eager students.  Harper says in recent years there may have been a decline with students in the summer work force due to the competition of jobs from older workers that may have been squeezed out of a manufacturing area.  However, now Harper says trends are beginning to get to normal with students flooding the summer job pool.

However, in Kentucky competition is still pretty stiff according to Steve Richard with the Kentucky Career Center.  Richard says you may still see some adults taking those typical college student summer jobs to tie them over while continuing to search for more permanent work.

Older job seekers may have an edge up on the less experienced college students.  Yet, students are still the biggest pool of summer job applicants.  It's a win-win for students looking for extra cash and practical skills.  Harper says summer jobs help give students structure so when they get a permanent job they will know what they like or don't like based on work experience and skills they may have obtained.

Some tips from Kentucky Career Center to obtain a summer job include dress for success, customize your resume to set yourself apart from other applicants, research the company you are applying to, practice interviewing technique, and always be early.
