INSTITUTE, WV -

West Virginia State University has selected Kumara L. Jayasuriya as provost and vice president for academic affairs following a nationwide search. His appointment takes effect July 1.

Jayasuriya now is associate vice chancellor for academic affairs and a professor of mathematics at Purdue University North Central. From 1993 until 2011, he served in a variety of positions at Indiana University East, rising from assistant professor of mathematics to dean of the School of Natural Science and Mathematics.

At Indiana, he received numerous teaching awards including the Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching, an honor presented to a faculty member who has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to teaching and learning through areas of self-evaluation, course preparation, research, instructional skills and student impact. In 2003, he received the highest faculty honor awarded at IUE, the Helen Lees Award for Excellence in Teaching.

A strategic planner, Jayasuriya led a mathematics department to create an online degree completion program and expand degree offerings, which led to an increase in student enrollment. He also has experience working with the community and securing grants.

During his career, Jayasuriya has served as a peer reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association and for The National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships.

Jayasuriya earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1993. He holds a master of science from Southern Illinois University and earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Colombo-Sri Lanka.

At State, Jayasuriya will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of R. Charles Byers.
