UPDATE - April 22:

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released their preliminary report on a plane crash that took two lives in eastern Kanawha County, WV.

The crash took the lives of Lazarus Enoch Sommers and Maryann Sommers, a married couple from Ohio.

UPDATE, 5:00 p.m., April 12:

According to Dennis Diaz with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), who conducted a press conference Saturday, the married couple who died in the plane crash have been identified as 50-year-old Lazarus Enoch Sommers and Maryann Sommers, both of Benton, OH. 

The preliminary report will be released in ten business days, however according to Diaz, it may take up to 12 months before it is determined as to what happened.

The NTSB are in the recovery phase and will be interviewing witnesses.

If there is anyone who witnessed the crash and wants to come forward with a statement, contact the NTSB at witness@ntsb.gov.

UPDATE, 2:00 p.m., April 12:

According to CBS affiliate WSPA in Spartanburg, SC, a married couple were on their way to Spartanburg to visit their son when their plane crashed in Kanawha County, WV.  The victims' son is reportedly on his way to WV.

CBS affiliate WOIO in Cleveland, OH told 13 News that the Akron Fulton Int. Airport had no contact with the plane once it left, and did not know who was on the plane.

UPDATE, 12:40 p.m., April 12:

According to the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has scheduled a press conference Saturday, April 12, at 4 p.m. at the incident command post at Ward Cemetery and Church, which is on Kelly's Creek Road, north from Glasgow, WV.

UPDATE, 8:06 p.m., April 11:

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has released a statement regarding a plane crash that occurred in the Riverside area of Kanawha County, WV. 

"This is preliminary information about a Piper PA-32 aircraft that apparently crashed  in eastern Kanawha Co., WV at about 4 p.m. EDT. The flight departed Akron Fulton Intl. Airport in Ohio and was destined for Spartanburg Downtown Memorial Airport in SC.  Two persons were on board. The FAA will release or confirm the aircraft N-number after local authorities confirm the status of the two occupants and release their names.  We will update this statement when we get new information." - Statement from the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA).

Investigators from the FAA will arrive in town around 7 a.m. on Saturday, April 12 to examine the wreckage from the crash that killed two people.

UPDATE, 7:16 p.m., April 11:

Kanawha County Metro 911 has confirmed two fatalities in the plane crash that was originally reported in the Riverside area of Kanawha County.

A small Piper PA-32 plane with the tail number N39965 left Canton, Ohio at 3:15 p.m. and was scheduled to land in Spartanburg, S.C. at 6:30 p.m., according to flight records.

The flight log for this plane stops just before 5 p.m., and the last recorded latitude and longitude coordinates land in Eastern Kanawha County, in the Eskdale area.

An FAA spokesperson confirmed just after 7:30 p.m. a Piper PA-32 aircraft "apparently crashed in Eastern Kanawha County."

The spokesperson said the flight departed Akron Fulton International Airport and was destined for Spartanburg Downtown Memorial Airport in South Carolina.

"Two persons were on board," the spokesperson said via email. "The FAA will release or confirm the aircraft N-number after local authorities confirm the status of the two occupants and release their names."

UPDATE, 6:52 p.m., April 11:

Metro 911 dispatchers have confirmed plane wreckage has been found near Pratt Elementary. The wreckage has been spotted from both the air and the ground, but emergency responders can only get to it on foot.

Kanawha County Sheriff's Cpl. Brian Humphreys has said the plane was not bound for nor was it leaving Yeager Airport.

There is still no word yet on passengers or possible injuries.

UPDATE, 6:24 p.m., April 11:

One lane of East DuPont Avenue in the area of Hughes Creek has been opened to allow alternating traffic, according to a Metro 911 dispatcher.

Route 60 from Riverside to the Montgomery Bridge also has been reopened.

Emergency crews are now looking in the area of Kellys Creek for a Cessna Saratoga that was reported down.

Additional emergency crews are setting up at Ward Cemetery near Kellys Creek.

Original story, 5 p.m. April 11:

Just before 5 p.m. April 11, Metro 911 dispatchers received reports of a small plane that had crashed in the mountains near the town of Riverside, in Eastern Kanawha County.

The Glasgow Volunteer Fire Department has confirmed that it has a crew trying to locate the plane, and Executive Air at Yeager Airport also received reports of a small plane crashed in Eastern Kanawha County. The airport was unaware of where the plane left from or its destination.

A metro 911 dispatcher said at about 5:30 p.m. April 11 all of East DuPont Avenue in the area of Hughes Creek is shut down to allow priority for emergency vehicles access to the road. The dispatcher said the area where the plane is reportedly located is "pretty remote," but emergency dispatchers would try to get at least one lane open to allow traffic to pass as soon as possible.

First responders are searching for a Cessna Saratoga, which holds between six and seven people, but emergency responders haven't found anything yet.
