    Alpha Natural Resources announced July 31 that 11 affiliated coal mines and other facilities in West Virginia could be idled by mid-October, potentially causing 1,100 to be laid off.

UPDATE:

Firefighters are still on the scene of a massive brush fire in Fayette County.

It started Sunday night in the Montgomery area of Route 60, near the Kanawha County Line.

Firefighters from Smithers VFD, along with officials from the West Virginia Division of Forestry, continue to monitor the brush fire, according to dispatchers.

Heavy smoke can be seen in the area as of Monday morning.

Fire rescue crews in both Boone and Fayette County, WV worked to get brush fires under control.

The fire in Boone County, WV broke out early Sunday evening, April 14. Van Fire Department was still working to contain the blaze as of 11 p.m. 

In Fayette County, WV fire crews were working late in to the evening on Sunday, April 14 to get a brush fire in the town of Smithers under control. The fire apparently broke out on top of a hill.

Fire rescue crews from Fayette County were still out as of midnight working to make sure the fire didn't spread.
