Wheeling Police Increasing Patrols Around Area Banks After Three Robberies in Three Weeks

WHEELING -

Wheeling Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger admits he is worried about the recent crime trend after a third Wheeling-area bank was robbed in a three-week period.

The chief is now working closely with the FBI, the Ohio County Sheriff's Department and the Bethlehem Police. The problem, he said, is that no real pattern has developed yet, as the robberies happen on different days of the week, at different times.

Schwertfeger said officers are stepping up patrols around banks but would not go into details about their strategies.

He said, "Obviously when we talk about providing increased visibility at the banks, we can not blanket the city, it's not realistic. We do not have enough officers to do that. And that's where it becomes very important that we work very closely with our citizens."

Schwertfeger added that police are depending on residents to alert them of suspicious activity, and urges anyone with concerns to contact them.
