The Charleston Fire Department said goodbye to their chief Friday, April 18, 2014.

After 23 years of service Charleston Fire Chief Chuck Overstreet is retiring.

Overstreet has served with the fire department since 1991.

He became Charleston's first African American Fire Chief in 2011.

Overstreet says it's been an honor serving the city he grew up in, for so many years.

"You know getting to help people that's what I like to do helping people and then growing up," Overstreet said. "I grew up on the west side so being from the west side and being able to come on the department and move up the ranks and then become the chief on the west side, so its been awesome. A great experience."

Overstreet says he's looking forward to doing some traveling, during his retirement
