CHARLESTON, WV -
Runners and walkers laced up their shoes Saturday morning and it was all to help out a good cause.

More than 8,000 participants from 16 states lined Kanawha Boulevard in Charleston for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

The 5K run/walk is the largest 5K breast cancer fundraising event in the state, providing breast cancer research funding.

"Breast cancer every family either has a relative or knows someone who's been touched by this horrible disease and so our family and friends have rallied around the cause, its about education and information but it also has a special place in our heart because of our sister as well," 5K runner Christy Day said.

The Race for the Cure provides funding for educational awareness, screening and treatment services to West Virginians battling breast cancer.

WOWK-TV 13 News was a proud media sponsor for the second year in a row at this event.
