CHARLESTON, WV -

Efforts are underway to save the Top-O-Rock house in Charleston, WV after it's been repeatedly vandalized.

"I was beyond shocked. I was horrified," said Jennifer Peters.

Peters said she noticed the vandalism when she drove by the house to see if any work had been done to the property.

"I cried, actually. I was so visibly upset," she said.

Police said the home has been vandalized multiple times before. Many of the windows have been smashed, and graffiti covers most of the walls inside.

"I couldn't imagine anybody coming into this space and looking at it in such a way to want to destroy it," Peters said.

City officials tell 13 News the property owners have 21 days to come up with a plan to bring the building back up to code.

Last week, Peters created a 'Save Top-O-Rock' Facebook page, which has grown to more than 1,300 members. Group members said they will do anything in their power to prevent the home from being demolished.

Peters is also in the process of creating a non-profit organization called 'Friends of Top-O-Rock', which will help facilitate the property's clean-up and grant application process if everything goes according to plan, she said.

City officials tell 13 News they are encouraged the property owners will make the necessary improvements and save the home.

"It's just a great example of a really iconic piece of architecture that we really need to preserve," she said.

The property owners have hired a security company to guard the area 24-hours a day.

In March, police said they made two arrests in connection with some of the vandalism to the home.
