PORTSMOUTH, OH - An unusual discovery was made Tuesday morning by the Ohio Department of Transportation crews while mowing a stretch of State Road 139 in Portsmouth. The driver ignited a fire when he hit a bottle, which officers later described as a portable meth lab.

The fire was put out and there were no injuries due to the fire. Lieutenant Michael Gore, the Portsmouth Post Commander with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, describes how people make these portable meth labs. "They use some type of a plastic bottle, a 2-liter pump bottle, glass jars and metal containers. They mix all the ingredients in there and let it cook," said Lt. Gore.

The incident happen on State Road 139 near mile marker 4. Ray Lunsford lives in that area and says drugs in that area isn't a huge surprise to him.

"There's a lot of drugs in this area. There's no secret about it. Everyone around here knows about it," said Lunsford.

And for Lunsford, the portable meth lab brings up a concern of public safety due to how close to the road the bottle was.

"It's real scary for little kids. I have five grand kids myself. I don't want them around it. I don't want anyone around it," said Lunsford.

Lt. Gore says these cases are extremely difficult to prevent as they don't have enough man power with the size of the county they are in charge of.

This case is still under investigation.
